'Allies' are now responsible for 25% of UK deaths in Afghanistan. Meanwhile the usual collection of securocrat clowns and laptop brigadiers tells us that 'success' is just around the corner. Yep, the Taliban are on the run apparently (cf. the same speeches from the same apologists around 2003/4/5/6.......)
Once NATO leaves, Karzai will remain for roughly the same period of time as after the Soviets departed. Or the US installed leader of South Vietnam after the final helicopter left the US embassy. The US estimates that over $4 billion per annum is required to keep the regime in power. The Afghan army is comprised of Uzbeks, Tajiks and other minority ethnics, all historical enemies of the Pashtuns, from which the Taliban come from. The Pashtun are the majority and if history is an indicator, will once again prevail. Whether the situation devolves into a civil war or not is in many minds a forgone conclusion. The more pertinent question is how much longer will America / NATO go on inflaming the nation of Pakistan?
The US has forced Pakistan with bribes and other means to enact policies that are despised by 99% of the population. This is unsustainable and risks destabilising an already shaky nuclear armed State to its foundations.
