The aircraft belonged to Azerbaijani company Silk Way Airlines and was carrying supplies to the base for troops in the NATO-led international military coalition that retains a small presence in Afghanistan.
Coalition forces initially pulled out of Helmand in 2014, when the U.S. combat mission in Afghanistan officially ended, but deteriorating security conditions forced U.S. and British troops to redeploy to the province in 2015.
