Winfield, who is a shackled prisoner at Fort Lewis, Wash., when we first meet him. He is a former member of the 5th Stryker Brigade, the so-called “Platoon from hell,” whose members, he says, “changed” fundamentally in the field. In cellphone videos,­ still photographs, home movies and talking-head interviews with baby-faced soldiers, we learn this terrible story. After Winfield, who along with several other soldiers was charged with murder by the Army, alerted­ his father, ex-Marine Christopher Winfield, of a murder committed by his squad members, his father contacted the authorities with no result.
