The line between stalemate and defeat is getting blurrier and blurrier. However the U.S. got a lot of what it wanted out of Afghanistan, just at a higher price than expected, and a long-term ground/air presence would extend beyond the country. Losing this presence would hurt but the region has already been sufficiently militarized.
