Mullah Omar and company are obviously waiting out the mass exit of NATO Forcss. In order to combat this reality and its perception, officials like Cameron are regurgitating a line cooked up inside the Pentagon: the Taliban cannot outwait us because we will be here after 2014. Despite a presumably sizable "residual force" composed mainly of SPECOPS, the Taliban would surely trade up for post-2014’s withdrawal. That way they can legitimately keep fighting "invaders" while primarily infiltrating ANA and police, a strategy that could regenerate its fighting strength. Military strength then equates to political power. The Taliban will never get close to taking Kabul again but they don't need to. Their prospects don't look any worse than NATO's.
Cameron parroting the WH/Pentagon line, James. Who would ever have thought it. Plus ca change and whoever the next UK PM is will be doing the same. Agree about the Taliban and Kabul. They only need to do what they are doing now. Sporadic attacks to show they can do it. Kabul will come to them in due course. Dare I say the mountain will come to Mohammed

ReplyDeleteEvery isolated fortress [Kabul] in the wilderness can not with stand the army of time.
ReplyDeleteA lot will happen between now and 2014.
