I think the Germans will be first to wilt, James. As you know Sarkozy and Merkel were two peas in a pod. She will be very worried now. Gillard is doomed no matter what she does - an embarrassment.
NATO definitely won't let Hollande out without a fight. The alliance could rally around France's leaky hole, at least until 2014, but many states could also be sucked through it. What happens to Spain and Turkey? What about all the smaller contributors? I'm sure NATO is already preparing a containment shield.
Will be very interesting to see whether the run on NATO countries actually snowballs. France, Australia, Germany, Italy...
