The Taliban had grown confident enough to fight during all seasons, said Mujahid, who was dressed in a traditional shalwar qameez, traditional baggy tunic and trousers and a white cap.
Insurgent attacks have tended to fall off in winter as the mountain passes they use to cross from havens in Pakistan become blocked with snow.
Qari Mahmud Mujahid is the Taliban commander's nom de guerre. He did not want his real name used for fear of being captured or killed by Western or Afghan forces. More.
The Taliban seem to be making a concentrated effort to promote female education and rights in general (by their standards), mixing their signals over negotiations. U.S. leverage is at its highest now - I can't say whether the WH actually expected a surrender - and will gradually weaken to 2014. The Taliban could take a better deal from Kabul/Islamabad and cut Washington out.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting elipsis, James. I find it hard to believe that either the Taliban or NATO/ISAF/US have the slightest interest in womens' rights or education. It's a nice-sounding bargaining counter and media-hook. Hollow.Fossil fuels and geopolitical hegemony will continue to be the drivers. When there is a woman president(not Shillary or Sarah or Barbara) women might appear on a dim horizon.
