Libya - More Nato Victims

Reporters were then taken to a hospital in nearby Sabrata where they were shown nine bodies, including those of two children.
The Libyan government said they had all been killed in the Sorman attack.
"Nato regrets the loss of innocent civilian lives and takes great care in conducting strikes against a regime determined to use violence against its own citizens," Mr Bouchard said.
"Although we are still determining the specifics of this event, indications are that a weapons system failure may have caused this incident."
The Italian foreign minister has warned that the accidental killing of civilians was endangering the alliance's credibility. What credibility would that be?

  1. Hi, Tony.

Murray Dobbin wrote this in The Tyee, an online news site from British Columbia.

    Libya, Canada's Other Ugly War

Every single member in the HoC backed the continuation of the "humanitarian" effort except for one MP, Elizabeth May, our lone Green Party member.

Harper was furious. He wanted a unanimous vote to continue bombing. Looks better on his war resumé, I guess, if he had the backing of "all the people".

Most Canadians (66% by an informal poll) don't back this war. So, we had one MP out of 300+ who actually represented most Canadians.

I think we've got problems (as if I didn't know that already.)

  2. Precision munitions have brought with them the false expectation of perfection. Nevertheless, the U.S. and EU have done a terrible job managing perceptions of Libya. They've put themselves in a bad position for civilian casualties.

  3. Filo,
I always think of Canada as about as far removed from warmongering as any country can be. I have visited Ontario many times and have family there. The news from there is depressing these days. The figures you quote reflect the stats here in the UK. The manacles attaching both countries to American foreign policy are just too tight. For now.

  4. James,
Terrible job of managing the realities as well as the perceptions IMO.
