Haji Abraham, the former district chief of Gereshk District in Helmand province, was killed on Monday. NATO said they were attempting to 'capture Taliban insurgents' when "a joint security force" shot and killed Abraham, an ISAF statement said Thursday. At the time, ISAF said, he "demonstrated hostile intent by brandishing a hand-grenade."
Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Helmand's governor "were briefed in detail" after the latest bungled raid and the initial investigation. There will be more information provided when the probe is complete, ISAF said. During the operation, six men were detained and one was released, the statement said. Troops found material linking the men to "insurgent activity." Sounds familiar in the context of a lot of other innocent victims.
The news came on the same day that British Foreign Secretary William Hague said a British aid worker who died during a failed rescue attempt in Afghanistan was killed by a U.S. grenade.
Linda Norgrove was killed in the operation October 6. She had been kidnapped in a remote region of Afghanistan September 26.
