The BBC has been one of the major cheerleaders for the debacle and 'our boys' in Afghanistan (Remember This?). They reported this morning on Radio 4 that billions of pounds pumped into Afghanistan had been 'squandered or stolen.' This has been known for some time by anyone who has followed events or, indeed, this site. Better late than never. But why are these wasted billions never mentioned in the discussions on the draconian cuts to services which have happened and will continue to cut deeper to judge by the Chancellor's statement. It's always blamed, with partial accuracy, on the global financial crisis. That's not the whole story. The waste of money, if not lives, has been much more crass and profligate in Afghanistan than even the debacle in Iraq. Gordon Brown's fingerprints are all over both catastrophes. He wrote the cheques. Another fact which the BBC will never air as they try to eulogize him in reports of his departure (except for a seat in the Lords no doubt) from the political scene.
