The 22-year-old Specialist James Wickliff returned to the U.S. after the August 12 explosion with non-life threatening injuries. He died Friday at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, after the fungus - which lives in the soil of southern Afghanistan - took over his body.
