In addition, we reaffirm our support for the universal rights of the Algerian people, including assembly and expression."
Yes, I'm not optimistic about the demonstrations in the short term either, James. But the Rubicon is crossed and the genie will not go back in the bottle (mixed metaphor there). I shudder to think what is happening to the people arrested recently in Egypt and Tunisia but more so in Algeria where the record of brutality is even worse. Robert Fisk provides a vignette of modern Algerian police methods in his book 'The Great War For Civilisation.'
