Photos Des Manifestants En L'Algerie et Tunisia

Bon courage aux manifestants. Good luck to the pro-freedom (real freedom, not the George Bush kind) movements all over the world.

  1. They're going to need all the luck they can get. The road to revolution is bumpier outside of Egypt, and America isn't eager to lose any more "allies." Will take a period of months for other Muslims to copy their Egyptian brothers and sisters.

30,000 riot police suppressing Algeria's demonstrations receives the following State Department Tweet: "We note the ongoing protests in Algeria, and call for restraint on the part of the security services. In addition, we reaffirm our support for the universal rights of the Algerian people, including assembly and expression."

The first of many toothless statements to follow.

  2. Yes, I'm not optimistic about the demonstrations in the short term either, James. But the Rubicon is crossed and the genie will not go back in the bottle (mixed metaphor there). I shudder to think what is happening to the people arrested recently in Egypt and Tunisia but more so in Algeria where the record of brutality is even worse. Robert Fisk provides a vignette of modern Algerian police methods in his book 'The Great War For Civilisation.'
