For 'shift of focus' read 'scramble for the exits'. The banner won't say 'Mission Accomplished' emblazoned behind an airforce-jacketed Obama.

The first two, Daoud Khan and Karaki were killed in the the 70s and 80s. The fourth, Amin was killed by the KGB. The fifth, Najibullah was executed by the Taliban. There are others who were assassinated too. This is fascinating link:
