But this week he was caught up amid reports of a huge suicide attack being foiled at the ministry of defence, with 11 suicide vests found and as many as 18 people arrested.

It was said officials of Afghanistan's intelligence service, the National Directorate of Security (NDS), were warning of an attack by the Haqqani Network, an insurgent group allied to the Taliban, which would also involve Afghan soldiers.

According to the rumour mill, the NDS had asked Afghanistan's defence minister to dismiss a general with longstanding "links" to the Haqqanis.

The reports triggered a frenzy of speculation that refused to die down completely, despite a series of formal defence ministry statements vehemently denying anything had happened, and the presidency threatening legal action.

It is an illustration of both the factionalism that plagues the authorities in Kabul, and the persistence of rumour in the Afghan capital. MORE

US Developing Nuclear Drones

The Sandia-Northrop Grumman team looked at numerous different power systems for large- and medium-sized drones before settling on a nuclear solution. Northrop Grumman is known to have patented a drone equipped with a helium-cooled nuclear reactor as long ago as 1986, and has previously worked on nuclear projects with the US air force research laboratory. Designs for nuclear-powered aircraft are known to go back as far as the 1950s.The research team found that the nuclear drones were able to provide far more surveillance time and intelligence information per mission compared to other technologies, and also to reduce the considerable costs of support systems – eliminating the need, for example, for forward bases and fuel supplies in remote and possibly hostile areas.A halt has been called to the work for now, due to worries that public opinion will not accept the idea of such a potentially hazardous technology, with the inherent dangers of either a crash – in effect turning the drone into a so-called dirty bomb – or of its nuclear propulsion system falling into the hands of terrorists or unfriendly powers. Since the attacks of September 11, the main strategy of America was to prevent Afghanistan being reused as a safe haven for terrorists through the elimination of al-Qaeda. While America was sticking to such a basic strategy during the past eleven years, it altered its target many times by changing decisions in accordance with the changing conditions. These were briefly as overthrow of the Taliban, then the increased reconstruction process, within this process the burden sharing in international cooperation which has been highly discussed and the decision of withdrawal. Lastly, with the decision taken at the Lisbon Summit in 2010, for both NATO and American soldiers, the final withdrawal date from Afghanistan was determined to be December 2014. Egypt - Muslim Brotherhood To Contest Presidency

In a dramatic shift that amounted to a political bombshell in Egypt, the Brotherhood nominated deputy leader Khayrat el-Shater on Saturday. The multimillionaire businessman has played a key role in guiding the group through the tumultuous transition since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in last year's popular uprising.
Because of the Brotherhood's success in the parliamentary vote and the reach of its grassroots political organization, the candidate it nominates or backs will be considered the frontrunner in the race for the May 23-24 vote.
And if el-Shater wins, the Brotherhood would completely dominate the political arena and could push for changes such as stricter adherence to Islamic law. A Muslim Brotherhood government could also translate into rockier relations with Israel and the United States.
