How the Islamic State Could Be Reborn in Afghanistan
How the Islamic State Could Be Reborn in Afghanistan | The Diplomat:
Despite a long war in Afghanistan, the regional powers are still far from reaching a consensus on how to end the bloodshed and find a win-win solution for all.
Recently, we have seen the re-shaping of alliances and re-balancing of interests in this strategically important region. Countries who were bitter rivals during the period of Afghan jihad are coming closer while those who remained aloof are actively expanding their role in Afghanistan.
The visits from Taliban delegations to Shiite Iran, a country that once came to the brink of a full-fledged war with the Taliban regime and that continued supporting the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance throughout the 1990s, will be a source of concern for the long time Taliban supporters such as Sunni Pakistan and Sunni Wahhabi Saudi Arabia.

Our generals failed in Afghanistan | Foreign Policy
Our generals failed in Afghanistan | Foreign Policy: The ascent of David Petraeus and the Army’s rediscovery of counterinsurgency doctrine led many to believe that the military had dramatically adapted itself for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unfortunately the transformation was only skin deep. Petraeus was a myth, and the intellectual father of the Army only in the eyes of the national media. The institutional inertia of the military bureaucracy never caught up with the press releases. The result was a never-ending series of public pronouncements by senior leaders about the importance of counterinsurgency, accompanied by a continuation of Cold War-era personnel and rotation policies that explicitly short-changed the effort.

New narrative on Afghanistan?
The two invasions have cost the US more than three trillion dollars and the lives of thousands of its own soldiers, besides the killing of hundreds of thousands of civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq, displacing millions others, and inflicting incalculable economic damage upon the two countries. The US invasion of 2003 and its subsequent mismanagement destabilised not only Iraq but the whole of the Middle East as reflected by the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Syria, and their adverse effects on the regional peace and stability. In the face of the mounting costs of the US military occupation of Iraq in blood and treasure, Washington was left with no choice but to stage an organised military withdrawal from the country leaving it virtually in shambles.
